"I was a patient on ward 29 for ..."

About: Barnsley Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I was a patient on ward 29 for 5 days and had surgery to remove my gall bladder in that time. I was very nervous but the wonderful nursing staff really put me at ease, and throughout my stay nothing was too much trouble for them, even when they were short staffed and run off their feet. The staff did everything to make me as comfortable as possible and made an unpleasant time bearable. This included thoroughly explaining procedures, taking time to listen to my concerns and offer reassurance and in the case of one particular member of the nursing team, put a smile on my face with their humour!

I was kept fully informed at all times about what was happening and was given pain medication when I needed it rather than just on the usual drugs round. The whole staff seemed to work as a team and everyone had a great attitude towards the patients. I feel I was treated with dignity and respect by everyone.

I hope that if ever I am unfortunate enough to need to be admitted to hospital again, I get another team like this one in charge of my care.

Also the staff in A&E were marvellous, I was seen quickly, given the pain medication I needed immediately and was transferred to the ward as soon as a porter became available.

Thank you to everyone involved in my care.

What could be improved

The car park - no spaces were available when my husband took me to A&E, he had to drop me off on the street, park about a mile away and walk back to find me.

You may be interested to know we've just opened a new car park adjacent to the hospital, which will create almost 300 extra spaces. If you do have to come for treatment again, hopefully this will make it a bit easier for you and your husband to park closeby.''
