"Poor communication at Barnsley"

About: Barnsley Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as the patient),

I went to Barnsley GDH for an exploration of a lump on my neck. I was in the ENT department, on ward 29. I was pleased that on the way to theatre everything was explained about the anaesthetic and what would be done.

Though I found some of the nurses didn't attend to me as well as the elderly patients (as I was younger by about 40 years).

The morning after I was struggling to sit to sit up and a nurse (whilst helping other elderly patients) just kept saying "Come on, you can do it!" for 20 minutes.

The ENT consultant Mr. M. Wickham was great in the time from the first appointment to surgery.

The nurses should not try to be ageist, i.e. treat younger patients same as elderly ones.

Also, the information on the outcome of surgery should have been explained to me as I was told what happened by my Grandma, who was told by a nurse. It was never fully explained what was found.

I would like to thank the two male Aux nurses on ward 29 (on 25/26 July) and Helen Shephard from ward 29.
