"Nothing at all about CDU."

About: Pilgrim Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Nothing at all about CDU.

What could be improved

Some of the Nurses should be reminded that they are dealing with PEOPLE with feelings. Perhaps if they could imagin their own loved ones lying there instead then they maybe they would be a little more compassionate.(Especially in my case as my Father was dying) Instead I was told that they needed the bed so would have to move him to another ward and that the Nurse had hardly been in the room to check on Dad as they were so busy! We were then taken in the lift to Ward 3B at 7.30pm. The lift broke down! My Father had only a thin cotton sheet covering him. It was freezing cold. The LIFTS definately need to be sorted out. Also communication between Doctors and Nurses seems zero! The Doctors clearly told us Dad would not be moved as his death was imminent. The Nurses have since stated that Drs have no right to say who stays or goes on the ward??? The Doctors along with my family after much soul searching decided to put the Liverpool Care Pathway into place. Someone then took it upon themselves to take Dad off Liverpool Care Pathway WITHOUT our consent.

Anything else?

My Father was dying of Cancer but because he'd developed a chest inf with breathing complications he was admitted unexpectedly.

The treatment he had on the last day of his life here was disgusting. It was also extremely upsetting for us as his family to witness. We have put in a formal complaint. I would strongly advise anyone with a loved one suffering from a terminal illness to avoid admission to this Hospital in particular CDU ward. They do not seem to know how to deal with terminally ill people both medically and compassionately.
