"Evergreen Centre"

Appalling quality of care, communication and supervision of patients. Very good at talking the talk here, however, beyond abysmal at putting it into practise. Dangerously low staffing levels at times, protocols and procedures that simply aren't adhered to, care plans that aren't followed and observation levels that aren't effectively managed. The ethos of this unit is a "collaborative approach", the reality is to wait for patients to either get so sick of being here they eat their way out, relapse and get readmitted somewhere else, or to adult services, or to wait for patients to fake their way out without being recovered. Some genuinely lovely members of staff who want to make a difference and help the young people, however, the poor management and red tape makes that incredibly difficult to achieve. Do not send your child here if you want them to get better. It is a toxic, unhelpful, dangerous environment that sadly enables eating disorders and other mental health conditions with their inability to manage away from the standard, outdated rhetoric. And should you dare to question the methods, they close ranks

Response from West Lane Hospital

The Evergreen Team are sincerely sorry that you feel your child has had a poor experience within our service. We are aware that these comments have deeply saddened the team who genuinely strive to provide the best possible care and treatment for all our patients.

Our approach to providing treatment is based upon the best possible evidence available, and delivering the best quality of care is our priority.

Managing young people with complex eating disorders brings about many challenges, and we understand how difficult this must be for the young person and their families. We apologise that you felt our staffing levels are insufficient; we continually monitor this daily, and adjust resources where and when needed.

Our staffing levels are nationally published as part of the ‘Hard Truths’ agenda, which can be openly accessed by all.

Additionally, our staffing establishment conforms to national recommendations, including that issued by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

We welcome your feedback and would like the opportunity to discuss further. Our Head of Service has been fully briefed on these comments and he would be more than willing to meet with you and your family. If you would like arrange this please contact Corinne Aspel Lead Nurse Patient Experience on 01913333566 or by e mail corinne.aspel@nhs.net
