My 86 yer old mum came into hospital 15th Jan with a broken arm. My mum was put on one assessement ward for one night and then on another one for two nights before she was moved onto a ward hroughtout this assessement no one asked the regular family visitors any history about my mum and we were asked how long had she had dementia and was incontinent. The answer was dementia no incontinent no. On the ward she was unable to feed herself because of her broken arm. Food was left at her bedside and even though she was visited daily the food intake was never established during breakfast and lunch so whatever food we brought in for her she was generally to exhausted and tired to eat it. She died 14th February of pneumonia an infectiion she never went in with. We managed to get on to the palatible ward when we were told that she was very weak so she could die with some dignity and not in a row of beds with a shower curtain for privacy. The palatible ward is now closed so in conclusion. Out of the human race the elderly are the most vulnerable because they need the most care and there isnt the staff to cover this. They will starve because there isnt enough staff to physically sit with them to encourage them to eat and they will die in a ward because there is nowhere else for them to go. A beautiful building doesnt mean better care . I feel I let my mum down because she wanted to leave after the second week. She wasnt hooked up to anything.

What could be improved

That if relatives are available they are asked about the patients history. If the patients does not eat or take their medicine the relative needs to be informed so if need be they can be there even if it means for breakfast lunch etc. Or when it is drug taken time

Anything else?

Do not build hospitals that you cannot afford to run.
