"Giving birth "

About: Wythenshawe Hospital / Maternity care

(as a relative),

My daughter was admitted to your hospital to be induced as she was 10 days late, although her waters had broke the night before. She was told to be there at 8.00 in the morning which she was only to be kept waiting until 1.OO in the afternoon just to see a doctor, who after internal examination inserted some gel, and within a few minutes started having contractions. I arrived at the hospital at 3.00 only to be told that they didn't have any records of her on the ward and that I must have the wrong place, luckily her husband came out and saw me.

By then she was having very painful contractions and although was given gas and air, she was requesting something stronger and was told that she would have to go downstairs to the labour unit for that, so she was told someone would come and collect her, 30 minutes later still nothing.

Although I am not a midwife I thought that it wasn't going to be long before she delivered as she was having contractions every minute and she had started to push, I rushed outside to get someone and luckily Ina I think her name was came in and said there was no time to go downstairs as she was about it have it, which she did.

We have no qualms with the midwife as she did an excellent job under very difficult circumstances!

But as they were not prepared for anything, there didn’t seem to be any provisions made for the mother or baby, my daughter was wrapped in the sheet off the bed as there was no pad and no cot provided for the baby.

She was left like this for over 3 hours with them saying that a room was being sorted out.

In the meantime I managed to get my daughter sorted out with clothes and a pad which she had bought with her but no one came to change the bed sheets even though I had asked them on several occasions to do so I even said I would make the bed myself, but nothing was forthcoming so my daughter had to sit on a chair holding the baby for over 3 hours with no food or water supplied, at this point we decided to take her home,

So after the paper work was completed we left the hospital just before 8.00 in the evening.

I have had six children myself and have never seen or experienced anything like this. I only hope that this situation doesn't happen to anyone else.
