"Incredibly Rude and Un-helful."

About: Cumberland Centre

We attended the MIU on a Saturday evening, regarding worsening, but not severely worsening breathing difficulties in my partner. As a student health care professional (HCP), as such a clinician in my own right, I found my partner had a wheeze, which would have been suitable for a nebuliser, and a follow up with a GP on the Monday.

Upon arriving at the MIU the receptionist was actually quite helpful and the kindest member of staff we met.

We were quickly seen by a nursing assistant, who claimed without any assessment that my partner was not struggling to breathe. I did then say that I was a student HCP and I was concerned about what I heard to be a global wheeze on my partners chest, which was brushed off as someone will listen later. We waited for about 30 minutes later we were seen for a nurse practitioner which lasted less than 5 minutes. I was not impressed with this, as the nurse practitioner proceeded to explain how an MIU isn't suited to breathing difficulties (which I admit I was umming and erring over but never the less I made a decision I will stick to that this was the best to attend MIU rather than A&E or wait hours for NHS111). The nurse practitioner then proceeded to air down the route my partner was anxious but never even explored it properly, and then said they were talking in complete sentences (which they weren't). I then tried to explain my concern of my partners wheeze, which was cut short by the nurse explaining they are trained to listen to chests too but will not do that "to a clearly healthy person with no symptoms", which clearly and completely disregarded my own clinical and professional opinion, and the evident symptoms my partner was displaying with struggling to breathe.

I find this disappointing and thoroughly upsetting to find out and experience poor care when I personally strive to provide patient centred, thorough and high quality care to all with a smile and making them feel listened to and cared for, not like they are wasting time which is what I experience at the Cumberland centre . I understand the pressures and difficulties facing the NHS and health care professions so I would not have taken her to the centre if I felt it would be best sorted out by the GP on Monday which is what we were brushed off with.

I must apologise for not responding to this posting sooner. I have had difficulties resetting my password. However, I would like to assure you that we take your feedback seriously and would like to investigate this further. In order to do so, I will need your partners name and date of birth. We will also need your partner's consent to investigate this matter. Please contact me on my secure e-mail, claire.gatehouse@nhs.net

Many Thanks.
