"Blood Tests"

About: Gravesham Community Hospital

My son needed blood tests done took him down Friday morning after doing school run for his brother only to see people waiting out side the department.

Took number and advised it would be at least 1 1/2 hour wait told it is quitter to come in the afternoon.

Son had to get back to school as he had an assessment he needed to complete.

Took him out of school again this afternoon arrived at the hospital at 1.30pm but no disabled spaces available (I am disabled) wouldn't mind but there was one space taken up by a car without a badge in it and another by someone just sitting in the drivers seat waiting.

I just feel that with limited space if you are waiting you could park up elsewhere wait for a call and then drive back round.

anyway drove round one way system and parked where I could had hobbled as quick as I could back to the hospital arrived at 1.50pm to be told that they were closed.

Bit miffed by this as it is printed on the form from doctor opening hours 8.30 to 2.00 and does not say anywhere on form may close early if high volume of patients.

Staff pointed out they have notices on the door no good for me as don't see them until I arrive.

Was then told that the blood is collected at 2pm to go to lab well would it not make more sense if the collection was a little later so that they can keep the doors open until 2pm.

I have nothing against the staff at the unit but just think that things could be made better organised and a better check could be done regarding usage of disabled parking.

Hello

Please accept our sincere apologies for your poor experience at Gravesham Community Hospital last Friday when you took your son for his blood tests. We are very sorry that you took your son out of school and then had two wasted journeys.

The fact that you were unable to park on the second occasion due to unauthorised people using the disabled spaces is totally unacceptable and will be flagged up to the hospital manager. The manager in charge of Phlebotomy and the Minor Injury Unit has advised that unfortunately they only had 2 phlebotomists in the department due to sickness and the unavailability of bank or agency to fill the shifts which occurred from last Tuesday. Staff did all they could and signs were put up in the department but we can appreciate you didn't see these until you arrived.

All patients who had taken a ticket before the doors were closed to new attendees were honoured which caused the staff to leave after their normal hours on all 4 days. Unfortunately this is a walk in service and we are unable to announce any issues to the community.

We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience and anxiety caused.

Best wishes
