"In Labour, avoid this hospital!"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

My daughter was booked to give birth at Cramlington hospital and in slow and very painful labour she was turned away twice. Eventually when she was being very sick and we were told rather patronisingly over the phone that she could go back to the hospital at any time but to be prepared to be sent home again, we knew we did not want to go back there. Worried about my daughter and that she hadn't felt her baby move for some time, we took her to the RVI where they endeavered to reassure her that all was well. She was obviously very anxious and quite upset at this stage. The baby's heartbeat was dropping, something that Cramlington had failed to check. Fortunately under the expert care of the Maternity staff of the RVI my daughter went on to have a healthy baby. The RVI provided the good standard of care that you would expect from a Maternity hospital. Cramlington was a disgrace! Avoid at all costs!

Dear Sir/Madam,

Congratulations on your new arrival, this must be a very exciting time for you, your daughter and the rest of your family.

I am very sorry that you feel our staff spoke to you and your daughter in a patronising manner, this is not what we would want any of our patients to feel. I will certainly raise this with our maternity team to ensure that they’re mindful in future. I can imagine how worried and anxious your daughter must have been, I am pleased that she delivered a healthy baby and received the care that she needed.

It’s worrying that you feel the appropriate checks did not take place at The Northumbria hospital, I would look into this in more detail to find out what happened. With your daughters permission, please could you email me her details and I can start making enquiries. My email is Annie.Laverty@nhct.nhs.uk.

I hope the little one is settling in well.

All the best,

Annie
