"Awful Experience"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital

My waters had gone and I called Triage to get advice, in which they told me to come down. When I got there, they popped me on a monitor for 30 minutes. One of the midwives kept coming in, looking at the monitor with a worrying face then walking back out. After doing this a few times they kept coming back to tell me I needed to stay on a bit longer, but not once told me why.

I was then seen by a very nice doctor who did some swabs of my vagina and then left. I was not told what these swabs were for. Later, a nurse came to me and advised me that the results of the swabs would be back in 3 to 4 days, again I was not told what the swabs were for and therefore was not aware what I was waiting for or why I was having these swabs.

The midwife then returned and said they had to put me back on the monitor for 10 minutes but again they did not tell me why.

After being monitored again, the midwife came to me and said I can go home.

I had been told nothing! I had to ask about my waters to which they replied "I don't think they have gone".

After having friends that have lost babies and almost lost babies due to incorrectly being told their waters haven't gone, this really angered and worried me. I asked to speak to my consultant who was in clinic that day. This was denied and I had to speak to a midwife who basically told me I have to accept what I've already been told and advised me that I am free to use another Hospital.

Not once did anyone do a swab to check if my waters had gone, I later found out (by reading my notes) that the swabs taken were to check for infections.

People need to be told what's going in instead of being kept out of the loop.

I am 100% confident that my waters have gone and will be taking this further if anything bad comes of it.

I have had issues with this maternity department with all of my children and have no choice but to use this hospital as i do not drive and this is the closest hospital to my home. Unfortunately, due to these issues i have to choose not to have any more children in the future.

Hi Charlene

I am very sorry that your experience of our service didn’t reassure you. I would like to help to ensure that all your questions are fully answered and agree a plan of care, which I hope will reassure you.

Please could you contact Heather Rawlinson, Acting Matron for Antenatal services on 01204 390390 ext 4083 (or ask for bleep 3813) to discuss this?

Kind regards

Nicky Etchells, Acting Head of Midwifery.
