My labour and the midwife was superb. The birth pool was great. My second time with this.
However, my greatest disappointment is the lack of a tongue assessment of baby during the new born checks.
My little boy had a 70% tongue tie which was not picked up. He was born on the wed and by Thursday I was in agony. A breast feeding group, LLL, identified the problem on Friday, after my midwife home visit assessed as it being purely his latch. I was unable to contact the relevant member of staff on later Friday so chose to go privately to have it assessed and cut. I was informed of BRI clinics only run on Tuesday's and I would need to be referred.
Having seen the T&A this morning, I'm amazed. The one thing that would inhibit a new mother to feed effectively would be a TT. Yet it is not assessed for, but hip dysphasia is- this could be done by the gp and wouldn't be treated until the baby is much older anyway. How does take priority.
Breast feeding is pushed vehemently without this effective screening. The fact there is only ne meber of staff, and maybe a few others, that are able to assess and refer to BRI TT clinic is appalling and clearly governed by someone who has not experienced the pain of feeding a baby with TT.
I know of several others to feel the same and most have given up breastfeeding whilst awaiting a BRI appointment. The cutting procedure takes only seconds and could avoid such pain and heart ache.
I would welcome some feedback on this matter please.
"Lovely staff but no TT review"
