"Lower GI ward Churchill Oxford"

About: Churchill Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

3 weeks ago I had major surgery for my Crohn's disease. I spent a week at the Churchill hospital in Oxford in the care of the nurses and staff of the GI lower ward. I can't praise the nurses enough. The ward was full with recovering patients and spending a week in this environment is really quite humbling. During the first few days with my tubes attached and 'on-demand' morphine switch as my comforter I could hear how the nurses work their days and nights. A crash next door, a screaming elderly man who was very confused, nurses caring and chatting with the cancer patients opposite, keeping spirits high during tough times. I also really appreciated the Surgeon visiting every day. This makes a huge difference as every day there are questions and the fact that the surgeons team is there is so comforting. Thank you all.

The only thing I would wish to be improved is access to a dietitian.

Finally, I would not normally point out where people originate from as for me this has no relation to treatment or care. I work in an international environment and thrive in Europe. I embrace all nationalities and have worked and lived in many countries.

You should be very proud of having such a multi cultural and diverse staff. May this continue. Nurse Julie from England, Nurse Daniel, Sonia and Anna from Portugal, Nurse Teresa from Spain.

Thank you - Room 10
