"8 hours spent waiting"

About: Sunderland Eye Infirmary

I was sent to the Eye A&E after a visit to the opticians, no fault of the eye department at this time but I was not informed that I would be unable to drive once visiting so was unable to get the full procedure. I then spent 4 hours waiting to find out if the doctor would be able to tell anything from my scans as I was unable to get my pupil dilated. After 4 hours in the waiting room I was told to go home and come back the next day to have the procedure done properly. Within the 4 hours on this day I was only seen/spoken to by two nurse staff and one doctor.

I returned the next day to have the procedure, again I ended up spending just over 4 hours in the waiting room. After a very long wait I went to see the receptionist about how much longer I would be waiting to which I was told I had to knock on the nurses door, they were not helpful in the slightest and did not seem to share information with the other people in the department. At no point was I told that I would be waiting 4 hours to be seen. I was told that there was two others in front on me and then I would be seen, an hour later I had still not been seen by the doctor and only two other people had been in; it was a very busy waiting room. Once I was seen by the doctor I then spent another 20minutes sat in the doctors room while they went to consult with other members of staff. I appreciate the fact they wanted to be precise in their diagnosis however with just one doctor in the department there was a lot of time wasted.

I understand that the building is very old but the waiting room needs to be modernised to make the 4 hour waiting time more bearable for the people visiting. The waiting area has very uncomfortable chairs with drab walls and is a walkway to get to the other parts of the building; there is nothing welcoming about the department.
