My baby was recently on the ward for nearly a week it was a very difficult and stressful situation that was at many points made even harder through the behaviour of the staff.
I appreciate the staff are doing an incredibly hard job caring for sick children and I can see that there were understaffed on the ward and very short on time which would have added to their stress but on numerous occasions their frustrations were obvious when caring for my son and in their communications to me.
Parents are there to care for their poorly children we shouldn't be made to feel like a nuisance when asking for medical attention for our children we should be treated with some empathy. On one occasion a nurse slammed the door of the room we were in because I had pressed the buzzer for someone to remove my son's antibiotics machine-after moaning that they were not his nurse.
On another a doctor took blood from my baby incorrectly and put him through needless distress and when my son cried and was restless the dr was snappy and quite nasty in the way they dealt with him- he's a 6 month old child he doesn't understand that it's easier for you to take blood of he sits still if you can't understand that maybe you're in the wrong occupation.
If the medical and nursing team could treat patients and parents with the warmth and empathy that the cleaning staff, housekeeper and play workers could then maybe they could make it a less stressful place to have to be in.
