I attended Wishaw General Hospital early in the morning in late April after labour starting a few hours previously. I was seen to promptly by a very professional midwife with a calming manner and shown straight through to a labour room and from there to the birthing pool. What then followed was a very slow labour progression despite the pain escalating. My midwife, Ashley, and the student midwife were both fantastic and very professional, friendly and attentive. A little while after having to be escalated up the pain ladder to an epidural (expertly done between contractions by a fantastic anaesthetist Lesley) my baby went into fetal distress, an alarming situation for anyone, especially for a patient and her husband and mother who all have some medical knowledge, however Ashley dealt with this calmly and all the staff members that attended were calm, professional and reassuring.
Several hours later, and a change in midwife to the lovely Jenna (equally as professional, knowledgable and attentive) an emergency cesarean section was required. Again, all the staff were fantastic both in theatre and recovery, and before we knew it we had our beautiful baby boy. By now we had been in the hospital for 14 hours and at no point did we feel an 'inconvenience' or 'hassle'. Despite the hospital and staff being stretched due to an increasing demand yet an ever limiting budget, they managed to provide an exemplary level of care to myself, husband, my mum and most importantly our new son. Many thanks to all the staff but especially Ashley & Jenna, our midwives, for their knowledge, skills and ability to build a friendly yet professional rapport with us all.
