"Being sent to A & E"

About: Johnson Hospital / Gastroenterology Lincoln County Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

Went into A&E with a severe Crohns flare... liquid morphine, tramadol and zappain had been admitted for 14 hours prior to going to A&E... We were sent there by 111 as a priority case, having already had an ambulance to the home earlier in the day.

When we arrived a A&E we were told we weren't a priority case and had to wait as everyone else. My husband complained at reception and we were seen with in the next 30minutes.

I was asked several questions put on a trolley and put in a room to have an ecg and a canula inserted.

This was put in wrong causing a lot of pain and my muscle to swell as they were trying to administer morphine etc... This had to redone in another arm! Again painful.

I was given a syringe of liquid morphine and some buscopan. It took the edge of the pain away BUT I was still in pain.... and to my horror after the Dr came round stating my bloods were ok that I was being sent home

I explained that the reason I was in A&E in the first place was because my meds at home were not working but they offered no other solution and sent me packing.

Needless to say when I got home I was still in a lot of pain. I took my pain meds and didn't get any sleep, and I think I finally passed out due to exhaustion around 5am.

Luckily when I woke the pain had subsided slightly.

I got more help from the specialist the following day in an outpatients appointment that I did in A&E! ! !

Disgraceful.

Dear Lipstogs

I am was very sorry to hear about your experience in the Emergency Department and apologise for this. This is not the standard of care we hope to provide. If you are able to contact PALS (Patient Advice & Liaison Service) here at the hospital (Tel: 01522 707071) to inform them of your name, I will be able to investigate this further and provide you with a full response.

Regards

Dr Meg Kelly

A&E Consultant, Lincoln County Hospital
