"From start to finish everyone was helpful"

About: Gartnavel General Hospital / Medical Oncology The Lanarkshire Beatson

(as the patient),

After having a mammogram, cancer cells were found in my breast. I went to the Nelson Mandela Square first and then I went to Gartnavel Hospital, both in Glasgow. At Gartnavel hospital I was given a biopsy, then had an operation to remove the cells. After that I saw an oncologist, he was very kind and I realise now that it was a traumatic experience but everyone was kind. From the word go everyone was kind and generous – they were excellent. The oncologist even very thoughtfully suggested I be transferred for my treatment to the Beaston unit which is much near to where I live, which made the journey much easier for me.

From the minute I entered the unit all the staff were kind, professional and overall outstanding.

The staff understood the uniqueness of different patient’s personalities and so treated everyone differently. For example some people, like me, are quiet and give the impression that all is okay- when it isn’t and we are actually very scared. I never would have been able to pay for the treatment I received.

Everyone was so helpful, but one person who stands out in my care is Sharon. On the first day that I entered the glass doors Sharon on reception came out and put her arms around me – she must have seen how apprehensive I was. I don’t think she realises she’s so important because she’s the first person patient’s meet and no matter what position, staff are in in the system – they all have an important role to play. Each person’s role is as important as everyone else’s.

Dear Plaid853

Thank you very much for taking the time to post on Patient Opinion. I am pleased to hear that not only your treatment went well and is going well but the way in which you received that treatment meant so much to you. You have expressed the difference it makes to be shown kindness by our staff at what much be such a stressful and emotional time.

I will pass on your post to our staff in Gartnavel Hospital and I would like to wish you well for the remainder of your treatment.

Best wishes

Lisa
