"Admittance to CCU"

About: Eastbourne District General Hospital

I was admitted with angina to A&E. Some 12 hours later I was in CCU. Within 24 hours I had an angiogram showing I had a Spontaneous Cardiac Artery Dissection. Being a fit, active, non- smoker of 64 with healthy blood vessels and no family history of heart disease this was a tremendous shock and frightening. All the staff, from the Health Care Assistants to the registrar, were wonderful. They were caring, empathetic and explained exactly what was happening.

The only thing I would say is that I did not meet the consultant in charge of my care, and I was not told why I would be coming back for just an EKO (?) rather than the 2nd angiogram I was initially told I would be having. I have had to research this decision on line. I'm sure the registrar would have told me more if I'd thought to ask the questions. It was the nursing staff who told me the decision had been changed. The registrar who looked after me from A&E onwards was wonderful - kind, informative and caring.

Response from Eastbourne District General Hospital

Dear Ms Lockyer

Thank you for your positive feedback about the care you received from the Cardiology and A&E staff at Eastbourne DGH.

They will be pleased to hear that you regard them all as 'wonderful'.

We're concerned to read that your treatment plan was changed and that you were not made fully aware of the reason for this by medical staff. As a Trust, we recognise that good communication is absolutely essential therefore we apologise that this did not fully happen in your experience.

If you still have any outstanding queries or questions, you may find it useful to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) who would be happy to liaise with trust staff on your behalf.

PALS are a confidential, informal service for patients and their families.

They can be contacted on 01323 435886 or by email to esh-tr.PALSE@nhs.net.

It was really kind of you to take the time to provide feedback, please be assured that your posting will be shared with the staff concerned.

We send you our best wishes.
