"Maternity care in Stirling"

About: Stirling Royal Infirmary / Clinical haematology Stirling Royal Infirmary / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I am Rhesus negative and so needed to get the anti d injection. I had a blood sample taken at my GP practice by the midwife, who was lovely, and asked to go up to maternity triage at 5pm the next day. I did that and waited for two hours before being told that my blood sample needed to be redone and someone should have called me to ask me not to come up. The midwife was very apologetic and had clearly been left to deliver a disappointing message to me. I understand that mistakes happen however given I am 31 weeks pregnant and attending after a long day at work, sitting for two hours when there was no possibility of me receiving the treatment I was attending for and leaving it to the late shift midwife to tell me this was not a great experience. The midwives themselves were lovely and the next day I came up (took the morning off work which not many working women could do at short notice) and got the injection and heard the baby's heartbeat.

What I would like to hope would happen is that communication between services e. g. The blood lab and the GP surgery and/or maternity team worked better. I imagine the midwives have plenty to cope with without having to let down tired and slightly stressed out mums-to-be.

Response from Gail Bell, Deputy Head of Midwifery, Women and Children, NHS Forth Valley

Dear T78

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.

I understand the anxieties of waiting and then being sent away must have been very frustrating and I apologise for this poor experience of our service.

As you rightly say, good communication is essential and the events at your appointment have prompted the Triage Department Sister to review the communication pathways between the services to ensure this does not happen again.

It was reassuring to hear your positive comments about the staff who met with you, thank you for this.

I hope from now on your experiences of our service are good ones and that your little bundle of joy makes his/her appearance when expected and doesn't keep you waiting too long!

With best wishes
