"Aberdeen maternity hospital - midwife led unit"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

I gave birth to my son in March, in the midwife led unit at Aberdeen maternity hospital. I had an absolutely brilliant experience and outstanding care from Faye in particular, who was responsible for the safe delivery of my little boy. Her support and encouragement throughout was absolutely fantastic. I had complete confidence in her from the beginning and was thrilled that she was there to see us through. She is an asset to the hospital and to her profession! ! I was lucky enough to have the unit almost to myself and had access to the birthing pool. The facilities are excellent - clean, comfortable and everything geared towards helping you to relax. The midwives throughout my Labour were all fantastic.

The immediate aftercare following a shift change however was disappointing. Instead of being moved to a ward I was left in a room on my own in the midwife unit for the whole of the next day just because they were quiet. I consistently asked the midwives for support in feeding but they were extremely unhelpful and understandably busy helping other women through Labour in other rooms.

It meant that for around 20 hours after my son was born, he had nothing to eat at all. Despite buzzing for help and going out to look for someone, I saw the midwives twice over the course of about 15 hours and received no help. At 5pm the next day they told me they were concerned that I couldn't feed him (no surprise there given the lack of support) and so I was moved to the Summerfield ward.

As soon as I arrived I was given outstanding support, which maintained throughout the night and the course of the next day. All the staff were a pleasure to deal with and by the following morning I was able to feed my son on my own - a huge relief. The midwife in charge the next day(unfortunately I can't remember her name - this was the 3rd of March) was amazing and set to work on getting us discharged as soon as she could, knowing How desperate we were to get home. She was great fun too! !

All in all, a great experience with some exceptional individuals! ! Thank you to everyone Who helped us over the course of those few days!

Dear Mrg11

Many, many thanks for taking time out, during what must be a very busy time for you, to post your feedback on Patient Opinion.

It is delightful to hear how positive you felt about most of your experience. Clearly, however we can always get better, and your story highlights an area where improvements can and should be made.

A happy ending does not negate a negative experience and so we will of course bring this to the notice of the service concerned. If they want to make any changes or provide any feedback of their own they will let me know. In the meantime; great story, great outcome and thank you again for posting your feedback.

NHS Grampian staff will be very grateful to you for your kind words in describing how they do a great job well and with smiles on their faces.
