About four years ago we visited Whiston Hospital with my daughter who was 12 years old at the time she had bad stomach pains, they did all the tests and after about 5 days of prodding and poking her sent her home still in pain stating they could find nothing wrong. After a few days she was still in considerable pain and so we took her to Alder Hey Hospital for a second opinion, after various scans they removed her appendix and some ovarian cysts in an emergency operation, this solved the problem and was the cause of the pain, why did Whiston Hospital not diagnose this? We sent a letter to Whiston asking for their comments on this and even got to have a meeting with senior staff where they brushed me with all sorts of excuses but we decided not to take it any further. However not the end of the story a few weeks ago my daughter who is now 16 years old had similar pains and we went back to Whiston and thought we would give them another chance, my daughter again was given all the tests and saw a variety of different doctors, they at first thought it was her appendix but we explained that this was removed four years ago so could not be the cause, anyway it turned out she had a water and kidney infection. However, on her third day in hospital while they were still conducting tests without my knowledge my daughter was put nil by mouth which I queried with the ward nurse and she said I would have to speak to the surgeon when he arrived. We waited a few hours and eventually he turned up prodded and poked my daughter and I suddenly realised he was planning to take her to theatre to remove her appendix, I questioned him on this and explained she didn't have any appendix at which point he looked puzzled went to the sink washed his hands and said oh well that my job done then and walked away, the nurse then came into the ward and said my daughter could now have something to eat and drink.
We were left gobsmacked if we hadn't turned up my daughter could have ended up in theatre having an operation she didn't require because these doctors from different departments don't speak to each other, check patients record properly or listen to what you tell them, my daughter was kept on antibiotics and in hospital for a further few days and the infection eventually cleared up.
Still contemplating taking this further.
