"Gynaecology - Open Hysterectomy"

About: Darlington Memorial Hospital

From being an outpatient at the Women’s Centre right through to surgery and my stay in ward 62 I can only describe my support and care as ‘Outstanding’. My consultant was very informative and explained it in a way I fully understood. I was never rushed about making any decisions. I was kept informed right through to my discharge and with my aftercare. Although my surgery was lengthy I went in on the Friday and was home by the Sunday. The staff were fabulous and just saying a small thank you didn’t seem enough for the time effort and support they give each and every one of the patients including me. The staff see what I have been through regularly however at no point did this come across and I was respected and supported throughout my stay. Any emotional moments I had were explained and I was put at ease and given the privacy and support needed to deal with this.

On a personal note I feel paperwork gets in the way of nurses trying to do the job they were trained to do however at no point did this come across and everyone did this as part of the routine they had, this was an observation on my part only. The night staff on the ward were courteous and kept noise to a minimum. The cleaners were all smiles and went about their daily task. It was great to see and audit being done on cleanliness within the department of which I have to say was of a high standard.

Ward 62 an amazing team of people, supportive, funny, light hearted, empathic, understanding a huge thanks to them for me being where I am at this moment.

The food was excellent and I felt extremely guilty leaving some as I am aware of the time and effort it takes in organising and preparing for such a huge hospital. The menu was quite lengthy and a really good choice was offered.

I listened to all the advice given and followed it to the letter which meant my recovery has been a lot quicker than I had thought. Although it has only been 4 days I feel without the positive experience and support I have had I would not be in this positive place I am right at this minute. I do have to say it is not all down to the staff as they give very valuable advice however you choose to use this or not to aid recovery, I have chosen to and am a testament to the fact.

My husband said it all when he said – It takes an extraordinary person to want to do the job they do and he has total respect for everyone he has met.

Once again thank you.
