"Slow progress getting help with my mother's hearing"

About: Wolverhampton City PCT / District nursing

(as a carer),

My Mother, whom I care for, was fitted with an hearing aids in December 09, but not on the first appointment date, because of a lack of liason between the hearing services and nursing departments, the fitting of the hearing aids could not take place as nurses (although contacted numerous times) did not turn up prior to fitting.

After having the aids fitted, the one whistled, after a long wait for another visit from Hearing services we were told the problem was still wax in the ears. We contacted the department concerned to arrange another visit from nurse, for wax removal. I was told we would be contacted. I was also informed another referal from the GP may be required (although the problem was a continuation of the first referal), still nothing has happened.

We told other home visiting nurses about the problem and they were going to look into the arrangements, but still no joy. Life as a Carer is hard enough without all of the hassle of trying to communicating with departments that do not listen.

How the elderly cope on their own amazes me. This is example where precious resources and time are being wasted. Why not give the Hearing services the resources to do ear wax removal and complete the job whilst onsite.
