"Walk in Centre - Go to Doc confusion"

About: Greater Manchester

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

This story is being submitted by Healthwatch Oldham on behalf of someone who wishes to remain anonymous. Any response to this story will be communicated with the individual concerned.

About 12 months ago I had a splinter at the base of my index finger which was very swollen by early evening I was in considerable pain and went to the walk in Centre at about 7: 30 I was told that the walk in Centre service would close at 8pm so they would be able to triage me but that I would have to see a Doctor from the go to doc service.

Following Triage I went to reception where they gave me number for go to doc. I had to go home for this call so they could telephone triage me as I didn’t have a mobile phone. They then gave me an appointment at the ICC centre for 10pm (where I had previously been ) I was seen and given a prescription for antibiotics however the only pharmacy open at that time was in Manchester so I was unable to get my prescription till the next morning.

I don’t understand:

Why my information could not be transferred over to go to doc rather than having to re go through triage.

Why I had to leave the ICC to come back for a further appointment 2 hours later and go through triage twice.

Finally the lack of communication between services meant that by the time I was actually seen I couldn’t pick up my prescription until the next day.
