"Outstanding Care"

About: Caithness General Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I received weekly infusions in the Ambulatory Care Unit in Caithness Gneral Hospital, Wick over the past 3 months. At every step of the way I was treated as an individual person with respect and given the information I needed so that I could give my consent for any of the procedures needed e. g. taking bloods, siting infusion catheters, removal of Picc lines. I was given the opportunity to discuss my concerns and staff went out of their way to find out information and even ring me at home to update me on what was happening. They even arranged lunch for me one day when treatment took longer than normal.

As a qualified nurse who works in another Health Board Region and travels a long distance to do I job I love (I live near Wick); it was a pleasure to be looked after by caring and compassionate staff who clearly love their job as much as I do and who treat all their patients as individuals. I can honestly say that if I had been trained as a general nurse (sadly I'm not! ! ) I would rush to apply for a job with such an outstanding, caring team. It would be a privilege to work with the patients and staff as a team.

Response from Elaine Mead, Chief Executive, NHS Highland

Dear Crispy.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this lovely message on a Patient Opinion. I know that the clinical team in the Ambulatory Care Unit in Caithness General will be thrilled and feel really valued by your comments, and I will ensure that they see them. As you live near to Wick, you will be well aware of the importance that the local people place on their hospital, a view which is shared by NHS Highland. By providing care on a daily basis, without having to admit you to hospital we can maximise this valuable resources, and, even better, allow you to sleep in your own bed! This is a great example of the new models of care that we need to develop for the future in Caithness, and it will take the sort of staff that go the extra mile like this, by phoning you at home to make you feel safe and informed. They make me very proud.
