"Falling short of expectations"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I was admitted to ward B3 QMC recently for an overnight stay. Whilst I appreciate it is a holding/assessment ward, I was traumatised by the stay.

Reception lights were on full all night

Staff failed to reduce the volume of their voice during the night

An unidentified male ran in and out of the ward shouting, singing, talking loudly and laughing. When questioned about this staff stated he was a patient however I felt if this was the case it was managed poorly.

I saw staff who were inconsiderate in their tasks - dropping trays, clattering bins, dragging mattresses into the middle of the ward to clean.

The staff who treated me did not speak to me or acknowledge why that I was up all night.

When I asked to be shown where the shower room was, I was told the female showers have been out of use for the past 6 months, but I could use the male showers! I declined as I was feeling vulnerable and feared I may encounter the male patient from the previous night.

The ward was very scruffy, there was litter on the floor and the floor was dirty.

I’m sorry to hear this – but I am grateful to you for taking the time to write and let us know where we could have done better for you during your stay. Your comments are very concerning to me. I will be speaking to the ward team and others about all of the concerns you have raised here, and I’d welcome the chance to speak to you further about this. If you’d like to, you can contact me on 0115 924 9924 ext 69003.

Abi Charles,

Ward Manager, B3
