My 76-year-old spouse was admitted for elective surgery. He has problems with anaesthetics and opioids as they result in various degrees of confusion. The whole team, from trolley ladies to consultant, dealt with this with marked professionalism (unlike some other units who have ‘dementia friendly’ splattered across their letterheads).
He has had six emergency admissions to other units in the past 6 months, where we met some very good people (along with some seriously bad ones) hampered by sclerotic, disjointed systems. This was the first admission during this time where I felt he was genuinely safe. Thank you, everybody on Ward 1.
