My partner was admitted to Monklands Hospital through the dentist after he woke up with a severe abcess which had spread into his throat which was causing him breathing difficulty.
After arriving to the hospital we went straight to ward 9 (as advised) and waited no longer than 3 minutes before my partner was seen by the doctor. The doctor explained that the abcess would need surgery and a drain would need to be fitted. My partner has never been in hospital before and panicked instantly but the doctor was so lovely and tried to calm him. He showed him to his room and said he would come back to speak to him. Nurses came in and put him on a course of intravenous antibiotics and fluid as he was dehydrated as he was unable to swallow liquid. The doctors came back and explained the surgery in detail and answered all the questions my partner had. He was told they may have to do surgery whilst he was awake but my partner was upset by this and they said they would try their hardest to do it whilst he was asleep ( which they did).
After the surgery my partner was in hospital for 5 days as he had a drain fitted as the infection was really bad. Throughout his stay in hospital the hospital staff, doctors and nurses were absolutely amazing. A few times the bag burst but they came in, helped my partner, changed the bag and bedding and didn't make it seem like a problem at all. I can't thank them enough. I honestly would have said the treatment we recieved was as if we were at a private hospital not an nhs hospital. We bought the staff chocolates and a card to say thank you and they were really happy. The staff at the hospital are fantastic, they even let my partners mum stay longer as she had travelled from Dumfries to see him. The staff are a credit to the hospital and the nhs as a whole.
