"A & E Great but once on ward you're left"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

I attended in January, with a lower limb injury and was referred from Walk in Centre, the Staff in A & E where great as I hate been in hospital due to previously spending some 8 months in over 10 years ago due to car accident so as you can imagine i hate needles etc.

The staff in A & E where great really open and answered all my questions and even give us a staff sandwich and drink as we had nothing.

Once reaching the ward I was left for sometime on the promise of a consultant visiting.

I could not walk due to the pain in my leg.

I had previously been given antibiotics via injections but a sister decided they would put it on an IV drip i explained that i don't like them as my vain collapses and hate it been in my arm but was told they were in charge and they were doing it that way!

I explained to the junior doctor the following day and eventually they spoke to consultant and they where happy with just injections again I hate needles full stop and the treatment from some of the senior nurses brushed this off as been a 32yr old man I should be able to put up with it, they did not like when I question why they doing it that way when i said they was another way, the laughed and said oh another person checking google,

I said no i have been reading the NICE guidelines why can't we ask a question and suggest something else yes i am not medically trained but fully entitled to ask questions.

Then i had to chase junior doctors and staff nurse and even sisters to get everything ready for my discharge i over heard them talking about me and belittling what i was saying i mentioned this to the junior doctor and staff nurse and pulled a face then carried on.

I waited from 11am till 5pm the following day as they did not have antibiotics ready to be discharged! they would rather stand about and chat and talking about people, and use the excuse of doing a hand over.

I might have been sharp and slightly abrupt due to the time it was taking for them to do anything but that does not mean that medical professionals can "take their time" with helping me.

I am sorry you have to much of a range of staff from outstanding staff to some that need attention,
