"A & E Department"

About: Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital

My husband is a Type 1 Diabetic with Kidney Failure. He was diagnosed with DVT, Pulmonary Embolism, Atrial Fibrillation and Acute Acidosis on 29/01/2016 at QEQM Emergency department. That visit was very good. We were treated well and advised at all stages what was happening. Yesterday my husband's legs swelled and following a telephone call with the Renal Unit at Canterbury, we were advised to go to QEQM A&E to discount any further DVT or PE. On arrival we were advised by the receptionist that there could be up to a 6 hour wait. However after giving my husband's details it was thought that he would be seen sooner due to his complicated health issues. He had to wait 2 hours to be triaged! We then waited another hour for bloods to be taken. We eventually saw a doctor 4 hours in who then organised a chest xray. After 6 hours we were eventually advised that there was no DVT or PE. No explanation was given for his leg swelling. The doctor seemed very unsure about the whole situation. It did not fill us with confidence. Fortunately I was with my husband and was able to insure that he was fed and able to take his insulin and other medications. As soon as we arrived home I telephoned Canterbury Renal and have arranged an appointment to see them on Wednesday morning. They advised that the A&E doctor should have sent an urgent referral to them, but when I asked the doctor about the next stage they said it wasn't necessary!!! All the praise that we showered on this department, following our January visit has now disappeared after yesterdays visit!

I am most sincerely sorry to learn about the terrible time you and your husband had on 4 April.

I hope that when you contacted the staff at the Canterbury Renal unit that they took the issue up with their colleagues in the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital.

It certainly sounds as though the doctor who treated your husband was unsure and should have sought further advice.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about this.

I do hope that your husband is feeling better.
