"Dental Surgery"

About: Royal Gwent Hospital / Oral Surgery

(as the patient),

In February 2015 I saw someone in the Maxillofacial department of the Royal Gwent, he kept me waiting 50 minutes which when I suffer from anxiety and barely leave the house this was awful, he barely spoke to me just told me what I should have done which was to have all my teeth on my upper jaw removed. I still don't know if this was the right decision. The x ray machine was broken so I was told I need to come back the following week. More waiting. I was then told I would have a slight wait for my two appointments. Due to other problems I pushed it to the back of my mind and before I knew it it was December. I phoned and was told that lots of patients had been moved to other lists but I had been missed out, they had dropped me off the list. I finally got a letter through beginning of February and had my first appointment that month.

The first appointment went well, I had all my teeth on the upper right removed, I wasn't pleased with the fact I had to walk round for a month with only two teeth at the front of my mouth but it had been done, the people who attended to me were amazing, they couldn't have been any nicer and helpful. When my teeth were removed gum had to be cut and stitches were put in.

The second appointment was a month later, again I was greeted and took through the procedure, the dentist was different though and I personally didn't think it went as well. I am now 12 days after the removal and I am still in a lot of pain, the dentist did not cut my gums even though several were at gum level, I am not sure how he got them out but he did slip at one point and the instrument hit my cheek leaving a large bruise afterwards. My mouth is still swollen and still bruised, I have exposed bone and am taking painkillers daily. Due to the swelling I can't put my denture in.

If I had to have anything else done here I would maybe be a little nervous but I don't feel the dentist did anything wrong, he just did it different from the other dentist, it's just meant more pain for me.

Overall I think the people here were very helpful and kind, they were very reassuring and made me feel at ease, I am fairly young and with my anxiety it wasn't something I was looking forward to but I think the staff definitely made me feel better.

The area where the procedures were carried out were very clean.
