Doctors need to listen to the concerns of the patients parents (as it was a child who needed treatment) and not dismiss them. They also need to actually diagnose and treat the issue not just lower the temperature and send them home or just take bloods and send them home, only for them to be admitted later when they are really really sick. Having to wait 6-8 weeks for blood test results is not acceptable when your child is sick. Having to phone up and chase blood results only to find out they were ready the day following when they were taken. Being told over the phone they were significanlty abnormal and that you should have been contacted and that you need to bring your child in to the hospital immeadiately, is not acceptable. A wait of 7 hours in the childrens assessment unit with no facilities for even a cup of water to drink or a comfy chair to place your sick child. Having to ask for assistance whilst there because your childs temperature has become very high, because the staff didn't check them whilst waiting the many hours is not right and being told by a nurse that she should have done this but hadn't got round to it. If you are given a timmed followup appointment in outpatients, then you don't expect to wait for nearlt two hours past that time and still have lots of patients waiting before you to be seen. Then when having to reschedule because you can't wait any longer you find that they don't have any appointments within the next 10 weeks.
I am appalled at the service recieved at the new QA, Portsmouth. Its one thing to have a new "super" hospital which is aesthetically pleasing , but it needs to be run & staffed properly. If by 11am the outpatients are running hours late, then the consultation times are not long enough or more staff are required. It took 3 trips to the childrens assessment unit before my child was treated so he was sick for 3 months. I am now having to wait till April to see a doctor folllowing his admission when he is still experiencing the symptoms that put him in hospital and we have lots of unanswered questions. We fear that he will become very sick again before he is next seen as we have not been able to see the people we need to, to express our concerns. If I had a choice I would be going to an alternative hospital as I feel very let down by QA.
