I came in on 14th March with a suspected appendicitis at about 11am. I was due to go to theatre at 2pm, but didn't go down until 11.30pm, having been given no pain relief or hydration, despite repeated requests until my parents arrived when I was bombarded with IV fluids
When I came out of theatre I spent four days on ward 8x where I was supposed to be given IV antibiotics and pain relief. Despite using my buzzer to ask for this I was told it would be coming but it rarely materialised. There seemed to be no communication between the staff. On day 3 post op, the doctor told my parents I was on antibiotics and my dressings had been changed daily, neither of which were correct. The doctor then unsuccessfully attempted to remove the dressings and then asked me if I wanted to have a go. Eventually a nurse successfully changed them. I continued to have pain relief and antibiotics irregularly until I asked if I could be discharged.
Throughout my stay I also witnessed elderly patients being ignored for hours despite buzzing for assistance.
"A very unsettling experience"
