"Caring, devoted staff on ward 17"

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

My 71 year old mum was rushed into a&e with severe sodium deficiency in her blood following a routine operation at another hospital she was discharged from. After a week in ICU, mum was moved into ward 17. From the moment she arrived there, the staff were incredible. The nurses, healthcare assistants, sisters.. Everyone. Mum arrived confused, upset, unable to be mobile but the staff became her lifeline and support. Being so reliant on others when mum is super independent, was a major embarrassment for mum but the team never once made her feel bad or undignified. They did everything they could for her maintaining her self respect and they kept her spirits up and motivated her at every opportunity. If she said she was slightly poorly, they rushed to her aid and monitored mum. When I arrived and my elderly father, they kept us informed and never made us feel we were a bother. As my mum started to walk again, they encouraged her to a point that her own determination was so strong she was able to recover well and progress steadily.

Mum was on ward 17 for 3 weeks, she is at home recovering well. The ward 17 team have our total gratitude & respect for the incredible work they do... Thank you so much for bringing my mum back to herself and home to be a devoted wife, mum, mum in law & grandma. I can't name everyone as I know I'll miss some but thank you to everyone... Amy, Amanda, Petra/Pat, Bruno, Justin, Emily, Sam, Steph, Jess, amongst many many others.

Dear Smiley7376

Thank you so much for taking the time to write of your dear mother's experience on Ward 17 at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. I am pleased that your mother is recovering well.

I will share your lovely compliment with the team on Ward 17, for recognition of where staff worked well together to provide your mother with excellent care.

It is really rewarding for staff to receive such comments of feedback, and I am sure they will be encouraged by this to continue to deliver an incredible service with care and devotion.
