Taking part in the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening showed that there was slight trace of blood in the samples. (Jan 2016). They quickly arranged a Colonoscopy at Kettering General on Feb 1st which showed a small cancer in the colon.
In mid February I had a discussion at the hospital with Mr Kelkar, Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon, who explained in great detail the procedures and treatment I would receive together with the risks involved.
A few days later, I had a pre-assessment meeting with a Surgical Practitioner on Mr Kelkar's team where it was explained in great detail what the enhanced recovery treatment was all about. At the same time I was given booklets which explained everything that would happen before and after surgery of which the dietary information was invaluable.
A few days ago, I had the operation which was 100% successful and I experienced very little pain afterwards. The nursing care was fantastic throughout and very soon I was on my feet taking short walks, something I would never have believed possible. I continued to do everything I had read in the notes I was given before the Op and it has paid off, because 2 days later, Mr Kelkar said I had made a good recovery and I go home the following day.
So today, I am writing this at home, eating and drinking normally, and before anyone thinks I'm a fit, sporting type, I'm not; I'm 68 going on 69 but with a determination to match the skill of the great surgical team at Kettering General. Anyone worried about receiving treatment under the Enhanced Recovery Scheme, don't be, you will receive the best care anywhere!
If it is not available at your local hospital, go to Kettering!
