"Post operative advice"

About: Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust

My husband has recently had a kidney removed via keyhole surgery. The process from diagnosis to removal was very efficient and the care he received following the operation, whilst he was on the ward was also very thorough. Unfortunately the same level of information / care wasn't received on discharge from hospital. We were not given any literature to take home regarding any side effects of the operation. It has been nearly two weeks since the operation and he has had to return to a&e as he was unable to pass urine due to clots and also has a lot of blood in his urine still. This may well be very normal following kidney removal but as we were not given any post op advice on what to expect, this has caused a great deal of stress to my husband. Simple things such as how long before he can drive etc were not explained and had we been given More comprehensive information on recovery then we possible could have avoided the trip to a&e. A follow up appointment has been received for 5 weeks time with the surgeon but really feel that at the very least, we should have received an information leaflet on what to expect following the surgery.

Response from Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust

I am pleased to learn that your husband's surgery went well from diagnosis up until the time of discharge.

It is disappointing to learn that the discharge process let us down and that this marred the good impression before this.

Please be assured that both your positive and negative comments will be shared with the teams involved.

If you would like to discuss your experiences regarding the discharge with a member of staff then please could you contact me on 023 92286000 Ext. 3473 so that I can obtain further details and forwarded to the appropriate team.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish your husband well and hope he is making a good recovery following his surgery.

Kind regards.
