"Diabetes structured education"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services Wishaw General Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes late last year and since then I have found every day to be a challenge.

I am ever so grateful to the amazing diabetic team at Wishaw, and the care and time they have given to me so far. Especially my nurse Katie for being so caring and supportive from the moment I met her. Also Ellen, Lynn and Jackie who provided the foundation course which has given me much more knowledge to control my condition. They made us feel very welcome and relaxed.

I'm motivated to further my knowledge in living with diabetes and as mentioned I have already attended the foundation course that my hospital provided. I am extremely keen to attend the DAFNE course which I am aware NHS LANARKSHIRE is withdrawing from later this year. I know it is being replaced by xpert however from my own research I have found that DAFNE is the recommended structured education programme for type 1 diabetes. Is there any courses running for this before withdrawal, I am also happy to travel to another hospital.

Dear Sugarfree,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback about the Diabetic Team at Wishaw. The staff will be delighted to hear how supported you felt and that you now feel able to control your condition. I will certainly share your kind words with them.

As you rightly point out, it is important for people living with long term conditions to have the information to help them understand their condition and understand how they can control and manage them.

All people with diabetes are invited to attend education programmes at certain times following diagnosis; you’ll be invited to attend the NHS Lanarkshire ADAPT course which has been developed in accordance with guidance published by NHS Education for Scotland. This four day course is offered to those people with Type 1 diabetes diagnosed for at least one year and has replaced the previous DAFNE course. It is delivered by experienced diabetes educators and will enable you to consolidate and enhance your knowledge of your condition and how you can manage and control it.

I wish you well with the ongoing management of your condition.

Kind regards
