"Very upset my operation cancelled at 17.45......."

About: Royal Oldham Hospital

I was admitted at 10.00am for gynae surgery, my obs were done anaesthetist came to do their assessment at 12pm then surgeons came at 13.30 great they said my surgery will be done between 15.00 and 15.30. Still waiting at 16.00 went to speak to nursing staff was told they would" find out what's happening they came back and 2ladies have just been brought back from theatre so shan't be long.

Still waiting17.05, went back to nurses they were a bit dimissive now and one shrugged their shoulders and said "I don't know what's going on". By this time I was furious I'd been nil by mouth since 07.30 and a migraine nobody was telling what was happening.

Finally at 17.45 the consultant turned up and started apologising as my surgery had been cancelled I was furious,I asked them when did they decide to cancel they said about 35minutes ago.

They said they could do it but would have no theatre staff to help them. I saw the anaesthetist on my way out they apologised for not having my surgery and said"it wasn't me who wouldn't stay to do ur surgery.

Basically the team had overrun and were not prepared to stay back finish the list as going home was more important.

I am an NHS employee I work shifts and if I refused to give a patient blood for transfusion as it was my home time I would get sacked.

What ever happened to putting patients first.

In this day and age a 24hour service is provided in the NHS, I was appalled by this behaviour at the ROH.
