"Outpatient appointment was on ..."

About: Fairfield General Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Outpatient appointment was on time and prompt x-rays obtained. Consultant was very friendly and approachable, listened to my account of symptoms and discussed options with me, listening to my opinion.

What could be improved

On attending the daycase unit at the appointed time, I found admin staff unhelpful and unable/unwilling to advise about the expected process for the afternoon. After being admitted by the nurse (2 hours later), I was asked to wait on the male side of the ward where nobody told me who or what I was waiting for or how long I could expect to be there. The chair was also very uncomfortable, for someone with documented history of back, neck and shoulder pain. The doctor and the anaesthetist came to speak to me, they never introduced themselves and just started asking questions, I wasn't sure who they were (no uniform or name badge) so had to ask who they were before answering. I was evenutally moved to the female side. I then waited until 5pm when I had been nil by mouth since 6.30am to go to theatre, where the nurse loudly complained that I had 'no veins'. I was told this was probably because the ward was cold and I was dehydrated, but made to feel like this was my fault and I should have known. After the operation, I was very groggy and nauseous, but couldn't get the nurses attention as they were talking about christmas shopping and ended up throwing up in my hands as I was still attached to drip and couldn't get out of bed. I was discharged 30 mins after coming round from the anaesthetic, despite throwing up multiple time (which after oral surgery is even more painful and scary - there was blood). I was given a sick bowl to take home. My partner had to ask for instructions on what medication to take and when as I had either not been told or told whilst still too groggy to remember. The nurses were unhelpful, despite there being only 2 patients on the ward when I finally came back from theatre.

Anything else?

Would not recommend this hospital to anyone. Due another procedure soon and have opted for MRI, despite living in Bury as cannot face that place again.
