"Overnight stay in a children's ward"

My son was referred here from Preston, when I first arrived I was surprised at the quality of resources as it had been 15 years since I'd last attended the site and significant modernisation had taken place. My positive thoughts were short lived. On being promised I would see the doctor again by lunch as my child was nil by mouth and was screaming he was hungry it was 4pm and by which time no food was available and no attempt was made to even offer him anything until I myself went down to the restaurant and was unable to get something.

By evening time i was starting to feel the strain and the nurse who took over on nights appeared to be overworked. It was nearly midnight before the lights went off. This was far to late for any child, it is now 4am and lights are still on next to me. Staff need to consider how to place children. My six year old is directly between 2 small poorly babies and comparing it to the ward at Preston is noisy, unmanaged and is not supportive for poorly children who need sleep.

I thought maybe I would buy the tv to settle my child. However on asking for headphones as being told by the person over the phone, I was left without them despite asking, wasting money.

In terms of my sons treatment I waited 4 hours beyond time for a doctor and 6 hours for bloods that should have taken 1. The response from the nurse was that I'll try and chase ... Although in not sure that they even tried.

In summary despite a new look the hospital care has not improved and an the older, tired hospital Preston offered much more. Also no wifi in such a new build seems thoughtless.

Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention. It is always our aim to deliver high quality care to all our service users. I'm sorry to hear that your stay on the Children’s Unit at Bolton did not meet with your expectations. Every effort is made to look after the individual needs of the children & their families, and to keep you fully informed & I am sorry that this did not happen during your recent visit. Our ward has been exceptionally busy over the last few months, & our communal bay areas can be noisy, especially when children are admitted throughout the night, or require cares or medication. Please be reassured that I will discuss your concerns with our staff. We accept that you may feel it was a long time to wait for an outcome of the investigations, and we are sorry that you felt the timescale was excessive.
