"End of life care February 2016"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

I am writing this review as a means of thanking all the staff concerned whilst my father was a Patient on Ward 5 at Rake Lane Hospital. My 90 year old Father was admitted earlier this month with a condition which gradually worsened and it became apparent that he was in fact seriously ill. This was confirmed by the Consultant for Geriatric Health Care who spoke to our family in a quiet room and basically explained what was happening and what my Father's options were. This was explained with sincerity and compassion and although a shock at the time it made us aware of the seriousness of my Father's condition. As my father lost the ability to look after himself, he was attended to by the nursing staff who treat him with warmth, humour and affection.

As Dad's condition further deteriorated, we were spoken to again by the consultant, who very gently but effectively, asked us our views on the depth of clinical intrusion we believed that our Father, and us, would like, and what we would believe to be the best course of action for him. This was a highly emotional time,as can be expected, but was discussed in a clear, plain but caring manner by the Consultant. My Father was taken off the main ward, to a separate room, where we were allowed, along with other family members and friends,to visit him until he unfortunately passed away a short time later. Throughout this final period ,he was attended to by some fantastic Nursing Staff and nothing was too much to ask.It certainly helped ease what was obviously a very emotional occasion. I cannot praise these people enough and wish to use this medium to pass on my heartfelt thanks from my family and I.Thank you to all concerned.

Dear Mr Blackwell,

Firstly, please accept our deepest condolences following the loss of your father, it is extremely kind of you to share this with us at such a painful time.

I am deeply sorry that it has taken me longer to respond to your review than I would have liked. I can imagine just how important it was for you to know that your father was being cared for with such warmth and compassion, with privacy and dignity protected at a very precious time.

Our team on Ward 5 will be delighted to receive this invaluable feedback, and know that they got this exactly right for you, your father and family.

With warmest regards,

Annie
