"I was waiting for my dating scan ..."

About: Barnsley Hospital

(as the patient),

What could be improved

I was waiting for my dating scan at Maternity Services for 40 minutes, where several patients who arrived after me were called for a scan before me. When I enquired at the reception if I was still being seen, the receptionist said they would check, and after a few minutes told me that I would be next to be seen. Obviously errors do happen, but unfortunately no explanation and no apology were offered. In addition after my scan when I enquired at the reception if I could have the picture of my baby, I was told that it might be too late and that I should have told the scanographer earlier, where I was not told anything about how to get the pictures when I arrived.

While I was waiting, the receptionist loudly discussed personal information about the patients, where other patients could clearly overhear everything. being said.

This experience has left me feeling very upset, while I was also physically uncomfortable being made to wait for 40 minutes with the full bladder and I am considering making a formal complaint.

Anything else?

A more courteous attitude with a simple apology would have been very welcomed.

Response from Barnsley Hospital

Iain Lovell, Head of Communications at the Hospital said: "The hospital offers its apologies to the lady concerned over her experience, which we are confident is an exception to our normal high level of service and patient care. We will be taking on board her comments to improve our scan pictures procedure and also to look at the confidentiality issues over the reception area which she raised in her comments.''
