"Nurse needs to be retrained or let go!"

About: Princess Margaret Hospital

In February 2016 I had keyhole surgery.

Within a few hours of surgery whilst I was still unable to walk unaided or use the bathroom to relieve myself due to the surgery ( my healthcare insurance had approved a 2 night stay to recover as I had no one at home to take care of me or to ensure I could walk upstairs ) a nurse entered my room without knocking, plonked my medication in front of me - almost shouted the way in which to take the medication, seemed to act as if I was taking up her valuable time and left, a short while afterwards they came back asked where my wife was ( I'm not married ) and said I should call her to take me home.

I was told this in a matter of fact way: you are fine, if you can go to the toilet there is no point you being here, what are you here for? You can be much better looked after elsewhere like home, you could get a bug here.

I said I was too ill to walk or move out of bed after 5 incisions through my stomach and a repair on hiatus hernia but I was told to get out that night and call my 'wife' to come and get me.

I then relayed that conversation to the other nurses who apologised for how this nurse behaves.

Luckily for me my iPhone was close by and I could record the conversation regarding the concern for me getting a bug and I should go home ASAP etc.

Basically they wanted me out so they didn't have to look after me. I left the next day after surgery, still in dire pain. I have advised my healthcare provider who paid for the surgery and the room and have also provided a written complaint to the hospital. No reply from them at all.

Furthermore, when I did leave I explained that the nurse ruined the whole experience, made me feel like a burden made me feel like I was not worthy to stay in the hospital and made me feel unwanted and like I had no right to be there.

I will never return to this hospital unless I receive an apology. The whole team apologised for the nurse and explained their mother was ill. Well, that's ok then. Walk around and make everyone else miserable !!!!!

We are so sorry to read your upsetting feedback. We have been in touch with the Executive Director of the hospital who is very keen to speak with you to hear first hand about your experience, and to put a plan in place to ensure that this doesn't happen again.
