"My father spent about three weeks on the stroke..."

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

My father spent about three weeks on the stroke ward at LRI. His care was very hit and miss. One nurse was rude and unprofessional, which I found upsetting. They didn't wear an ID badge and was 'bank' staff. I found out their name and made a complaint to three different managers but they still appeared on the ward. Another nurse was amazing and stood out from the rest, who were mediocre. My family and myself made sure we visited each day and picked up on issues, which we ensured were dealt with, including a urine infection that wasn't tested for without our insistence and the help of the amazing nurse, lack of pain relief given when it was clear it was needed and multiple bruises appearing. My father told us that some of the nurses were 'rough' and we began to realise what he meant. One time I visited and found my Dad in a chair that he had been hoisted in to and he was slumped in it and very upset. He had been in it for hours. The 'bank; nurse was sitting at a computer right next to him and had done nothing to help him. I asked for him to be put back to bed. An assistant said to me that they were '100%' sorry for the way my Dad had been treated and that they were understaffed and mangers kept moving them from one ward to another. My father firstly went to A&E and that was good then on to an interim ward while a bed on the stroke ward became available. This became available quite quickly. My father was transferred to the stroke unit at Coalville and they were all amazing. The multiple bruises he sustained at LRI soon disappeared.

Dear reviewer,

Thank you for taking the time to post your comment.

We’re sorry to hear of your father's care and family's experience at the Royal. We would very much like to investigate your concerns further and prevent this happening again. To enable us to do so, please email communications@uhl-tr.nhs.uk outlining your concerns, with your father's name, date of birth, address and the ward your father was treated on - if you know it.

Again, we’re really sorry that you had such disappointing experience.

Kind regards
