What I liked
The staff in resus in A&E when I was admitted were fantastic. The nurses in AMU and especially the Ambulatory Care ward were also brilliant. I was taken seriously and respected and the nurses were very professional throughout my 6-day stay.
What could be improved
Beds, or more importantly the lack of them. I spent my entire 6 day stay in an acute admissions ward with other patients being moved around at all times of the day and night.
Also, being only 20 years old, it is not at all pleasant to be on a ward which entirely consists of confused/demented elderly patients. Younger patients would benefit more in their recovery if they are surrounded by other patients similar in age.
For example, I would rather have been on a mixed sex 18-60 age group ward as opposed to the all-female bay which I was kept in for the first 2 days.
One or two nursing staff on AMU pink leave a lot to be desired with their approach to the elderly patients with dementia in my bay. One lady had pressed her nurse buzzer for toilet assistance and was not attended to for over 90 minutes. When a care assistant finally answered the call she was told that she would either have to wait another 20 minutes or wet the bed as there was not enough staff to carry out the most basic of nursing duties. 4 hours later after having been lying in a wet bed for all of that time she was finally cleared up by the nurse and HCA - only to be reprimanded by them for not alerting them to her need for the bathroom.
