"Urgent need to ensure public toilets are clean"

About: Addenbrooke's Hospital

I wish to highlight issues related to the cleanliness any hygiene in the public toilet provisions for patients at the Outpatients Dept. in Addenbrooke's Hospital.

Prior to a recent clinical appointment I was asked to provide a "Sample" and directed toward the nearest toilet (a disabled persons facility).

This toilet was filthy with significant amounts of urine across the floor, urine across the toilet seat and toilet paper strewn on the floor.

This was reported to the duty nurse who telephoned for a cleaner to attend.

There is absolutely no excuse for unclean toilet facilities, which are a very serious health hazard. Especially when it relates to a hospital building.

German hospitals, stores and food outlets all, implement a signed for inspection regime where the facilities are checked on at least an hourly basis or half hourly basis, cleaned and replenished as appropriate and signed off as clean and hygienic on a wall mounted control

A simple system to ensure cleanliness standards are observed and maintained.

I have noted similar failings in other toilet areas of this hospital's outpatients department on previous visits.

Standards of cleanliness need to be improved immediately.

Response from Addenbrooke's Hospital

Thank you for letting us know about the issue with cleanliness in one of the toilets in the outpatient department.

I am very sorry to learn of your experience, and I have notifed the staff member responsible for facilities in that area.

I would like to assure you that the facilities across the hospital are cleaned on a regular basis and staff will attend promptly to any issues identified outside the regular scheduled times, however I am sorry that you were faced with such an unpleasant situation on this occasion.
