"Recent Emergency Admission at Barnsley Hospital"

About: Barnsley Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I attended A&E at 1 am with severe abdominal pain at 16 weeks and was initially surprised how quick it was to go through and see a nurse, however 6 hours later I was still waiting to be seen by a dr. I appreciate the challenges faced by emergency departments but it didn't help seeing other health professionals sat about in A&E discussing how they couldn't wait to get off shift, saying there was no chance they were taking a patient up to a ward as it was only 15 minutes until they could go home ( I was the patient to whom they were referring), chewing gum, speaking derogatory about patients, saying they were bored! Not a very good experience at all. Certainly didn't feel like an individual but very much a number. All I wanted was assurance my baby was ok! This was of little or no consideration.

When I finally was take to ward 31 my experience improved. The nursing staff were lovely, kind, caring, professional. However, I was still seeking assurances my unborn baby was ok but this was not given despite my increase anxiety.

I went for an emergency ultrasound that afternoon and at that point I felt human again and was spoken to like an individual. The porter (can't recall his name) chatted to put me at ease was interested in me but with prying, such a lovely man. When I reached ultrasound the chap there, Chris, was amazing noticed my anxiety straight away, put me at ease, really professional and kind. He was the first person over 12 hours into my journey at Barnsley hospital who seemed to treat me as an individual and tried to understand how I was feeling while still doing a great job Thank you to Chris for restoring my faith in my local hospital.
