"A&e need to listen to patients more!"

About: Russells Hall Hospital

I attended a&e 6 times due to ongoing abdominal pain which I had constantly for 4 months! Referred to different people who didn't know what the problem was, one point I was told it was all in my head, put on various different tablets! One nurse even asked me if I was withdrawing from alcohol as I was getting palpitations after having morphine bare in mind I had my work uniform on! My final admission where I got the issue sorted was the one which was okayish!! Your nurses and doctors need to remember we can hear what you say about us especially "can we discharge her"then after being made to wait 3.5 hours in a lot of pain and then asked why I hadn't asked for pain relief? Ridiculous!

Response from Russells Hall Hospital

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback about our Accident and Emergency Department. We are very sorry to hear you have been disappointed with the service you have received during your visits.

All patients in our A&E Department are assessed when they arrive and we carry out observation tests to help the clinical team with their diagnosis and to identify what course of treatment is needed.

Patients' pain relief needs are assessed when they are first seen within the A&E Department and we make every effort to ensure patients are kept pain free by checking at intervals appropriate to their condition. However, due to the workload in the department we have to rely on patients informing us about any changes in their condition or level of pain in between those times.

It is common practice for patients to be asked questions about their condition, general health and life style choices as this may have a bearing on a diagnosis. We apologise if you were offended by some of the questions you were asked but we would like to assure you that no offence would be intended.

We have passed your comments on to the lead nurse and matron for the Accident and Emergency Department who have shared your comments with the team.
