"Ward 6A - Brilliant Staff"

About: Yeovil District Hospital

I recently spent 5 days on ward 6A and found the staff to be caring, professional and above all else happy to go the extra mile for their patients.

My only negative observation was that at night its seems that other departments use 6A for spare bed capacity and they arrange this via telephone.

Quite often the telephone would be left to ring for 20 minutes plus and on one occasion a nurse came onto the ward to quite vocally complain that the staff weren’t answering the phone.

This would quite often happen after 11pm and obviously disturbed patients sleep.

The problem seemed to stem from the ward staff being busy looking after patients or doing the drugs rounds and unable to get to the phone.

I’d have thought that there must be a better way of doing this ie the ward staff having a dedicated mobile or cordless ‘phone to carry around the ward with them.

Finally, I was really impressed by the standard of food.

I didn’t have a bad meal and the lunchtime plain omelette supplied with 2 squirts of mash in the shape of a ‘smiley face’ really made me smile.

Thank you for you positive feedback and also a really helpful observation about the telephone at night. We will investigate how to resolve it straight away.
