"Total Hip Replacement"

About: Orpington Hospital

(as a service user),

I had right Total Hip Replacement at Orpington Hospital in September 2015, I had been to joint school before hand and In hindsight some of the information could have been changed. There was a number of people there ranging from me in mid 50's to those in their 70's.

We were told about 12 weeks precautions and I think they need to say you may not be on all these restrictions for the whole time, as my surgeon said at my check up, I could have a shower by using a step stool to get in and out of it.

I was in a lot of pain after the op, and got an infection although they couldn't find out what caused it, so was in for 6 days instead of 3. Staff were fantastic from nurses to therapists, this is a purpose built unit for orthopaedics so you know your op is going ahead. Food was grim as was one of the staff who started having a row with a nurse who asked where a patients cup of tea was that they had asked for an hour earlier. I did report this to the hospital as the poor nurse didn't deserve it.

The early discharge team of nurses that visit you the day after you go home are fantastic and heled to answer a lot of questions. I have a compressed nerve at the moment, but I walk really well unless I am tired then I tend to vere to the right. I would recommend this unit and the operation, to be out of the pain I was in before due to osteoarthritis.

My recommendation is do your exercises and don't worry if you are not making the progress you think you should, you probably are but cannot see it and use all the aids on offer, your soxon and handy gripper will become your best friends.
